Rolled Rose
A classic crochet rolled rose on three leaves. Work one long strip of graded fan-petals along a single foundation chain, then coil it from one end and tack the base to roll it into a full spiral bloom. Make three green leaves, fan them out behind the rose, and sew everything together. Lovely as an appliqué, a brooch, or framed wall art.

Materials
- Red (A): 1 skein (8.1 yd, 7 m)
- Deep Green (B): 1 skein (6.1 yd, 6 m)
Total yardage: 14.2 yd
Gauge
Gauge is not critical. Work the petal strip firmly so the rose holds a tight coil; the finished rose measures about 6 cm across in worsted.
Notes
The rose is one long petal strip rolled up — there is no rose 'round'. Coil the strip from one end and tack the foundation edge as you go so the petals spiral outward. The three leaves are each a single spine-leaf blade, made separately and fanned out behind the rose.
You Will Make
Rose bloom (petal strip)
- Rnd 1:Foundation: ch 56.
- Rnd 2:Row 1: [ work 1 petal — (ch4, dtr) in 1st ch, (2 dtr) in next ch, ch2, (2 dtr) in next ch, (dtr, ch4) in next ch, sl st — over 4 ch ] × 13. The opening ch4 of the first petal is the turning chain. Do not join — leave a long tail for coiling.
Leaf
- Rnd 1:Spine: ch 8 plus 1 (ch 9). Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch back to the base (8 sl sts) to form the spine and midrib.
- Rnd 2:Blade: from the base, work one stitch into each chain up the first side — sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, sc — then a ch-3 picot at the tip (ch 3, sl st in the first ch) to turn. Work the second side back down to the base with the mirror sequence — sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, sc. Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew with.
Assembly
Make the bloom and the 3 leaves separately, then coil the bloom, fan the leaves out behind it, and sew them together with a whip stitch.
1. Make the rose: work the petal strip (ch 56, then 13 fan-petals). Starting at one end, coil the strip into a spiral and tack the foundation edge together at the base with a few stitches so it holds as a rolled rose.
2. Make 3 leaves in green.
3. Arrange the 3 leaves evenly behind the bloom, fanned out as a backing.
4. Sew the bloom and the 3 leaves together with a whip stitch, stitching through the rose's tacked base into the leaf bases. Weave in the ends.
Estimated Time
