A granny square color generator shuffles yarn colors round by round so you can see a color combination before you crochet it. This one draws every color from a named yarn palette, previews it on a real granny square, and lets you padlock any round you want to keep while you reroll the rest.

How to choose granny square colors
- Use an odd number of colors
- Three or five colors almost always look better than two or four. Even distribution feels flat.
- Vary the value
- Mix at least one light, one medium, and one dark. Colors of the same brightness blend into each other and the rounds stop reading as rounds.
- Let one color dominate
- Pick one color for the most rounds — usually the outer border. It becomes the frame that ties the square together.

Granny square color questions
How many colors should a granny square have?
Three to five, one per round. Odd numbers read better than even ones, and most tested granny palettes use four: a light center, two mid-tones, and a darker round framing the square.
What colors go well together in a granny square?
Colors that differ in value, not just in hue — at least one light, one medium, and one dark. Warm gradients (pale yellow to deep coral) and cool gradients (light gray to navy) are the two most reliable starting points; the 9 palettes above are worked examples of both.
Which color should go in the middle of a granny square?
The lightest or most accent color. Start light and end dark: a dark center reads as a hole and makes the finished square look smaller than it is.
