How to Design a Crochet Bookmark
A bookmark is a small filet grid: pick a narrow strip, keep the motif in the middle, band the ends — and let the maker do the counting.
What makes a bookmark grid work
A crochet bookmark works best as a filet crochet strip about 7 cells wide — 22 double crochet per row — with a band of solid filled blocks across the top and bottom rows. The narrow strip keeps the piece flat inside a closed book, and the solid end bands give it a firm edge that blocks square and a sturdy row to hang a tassel from. Any length works: around 21 rows gives the classic 1:3 bookmark proportion (about 2 × 5 inches in thread), but a favourite quote of a book can just as well get a longer strip — the grid does not care.
Where the motif goes
Keep the motif inside the middle 5 cells and leave a 1-cell margin on each side. Filet crochet draws with two kinds of square: a filled block (3 dc) and an open space (dc, ch 2, skip 2, dc). The open mesh is the background — the negative space — and the filled blocks are the ink, so a heart, a leaf, or a letter reads clearly only when open cells surround it. The 1-cell margins are that breathing room: a motif that touches the strip's edge visually merges with it and disappears. On a 7-cell strip the middle 5 cells are the whole canvas, which is exactly why small, high-contrast motifs (hearts, vines, initials) work better than fine detail.
The math the maker does for you
For a filet strip W cells wide, each row works 3 × W + 1 double crochet, and the foundation chain is 3 × W + 3 when Row 1 starts with a filled block, or 3 × W + 5 when it starts with an open space. Each chart cell is 3 stitches wide, and the block-first rule works because the turning ch-3 counts as the first dc and the first real dc lands in the 4th chain from the hook. You never have to carry that arithmetic yourself. Thread or yarn: the material sets the size
The same 7 × 21-cell chart makes three different objects: about 2 × 5 inches in size 10 cotton thread on a 1.65–1.75 mm steel hook, about 5.8 × 15 inches in DK on a 3.5 mm hook, and about 7 × 17.5 inches in worsted on a 5 mm hook. The chart never changes — only the material does. Size 10 cotton thread is the classic bookmark choice: crisp mesh, a slim profile that will not bulge a book, and it takes a steel hook (the tiny hooks made for thread work). The DK and worsted versions of the same grid make a mug rug or a mini wall hanging. Cotton also holds a blocked shape well — block the finished strip square so the mesh opens evenly and the ends sit straight.
Initials and names
The maker turns any word or initials into a block-and-space chart with a built-in pixel font — an initialed bookmark is a two-minute design. Type the letters, and each one becomes filled blocks on the mesh ground, with the foundation chain and row validation recomputed automatically. Single initials fit the 7-cell strip's middle 5 cells; a full name reads best run lengthwise, one letter above the next, which also makes the strip longer — a natural fit for the bookmark shape.
