How to Write Crochet Patterns
Five steps: sketch the shape, break it into crochet-friendly forms, turn each outline into stitch counts, test it, write it down.
To make your own crochet pattern, start from a shape rather than from stitches: draw or choose the finished form, break it into crochet-friendly pieces, turn each piece's outline into row-by-row or round-by-round stitch counts, work it to check the counts, and write it down in standard notation. Four of those five steps are craft judgement — proportion, yarn choice, wording. The middle one is arithmetic: turning a shape into stitch counts is the step most designers still do by trial and error, and it is the step a deterministic tool can simply do. Patterns are produced by deterministic algorithms and machine-validated for stitch-count accuracy — never written by a language model.
The workflow designers actually use
Published designers describe a remarkably consistent five-step process: sketch, decompose into simple shapes, derive the stitch counts, crochet and correct, then write it up. In a survey of 12 public designer process accounts, 10 include an explicit sketch or drawing step — among them lalylala, Pica Pau (who describes Pica Pau as beginning when she started “mixing her drawings with the three-dimensional crochet technique”), and lilleliis, who starts new dolls from drawings made months earlier.
A real minority skips the drawing. Pocket Yarnlings designs from a mental library of shaping techniques, and Hooked by Kati works math-first from increase ratios. You do not have to be able to draw to design. Both routes converge on the same artefact: a list of per-row or per-round stitch counts.
Step 1 — Sketch it (or don't)
Draw the finished object at a size you can measure, front view and side view. Anything measurable works — squared paper, a phone note, a printed photo traced over. The sketch is not artwork; it is a dimension source. What you need from it is a height and a widest width for every separate piece, because those two numbers are what become row counts and stitch counts in step 3. Front and side views matter for anything three-dimensional: they tell you whether a head is a sphere or an egg.
If you are designing a flat piece — a blanket square, a panel, a bookmark, a sew-on shape — squared paper is literally the pattern. One square is one stitch, and the drawing is already the chart. That is the shortcut behind every grid technique: filet, corner-to-corner, tapestry, and mosaic all read a grid as their pattern, and reading a crochet graph is the whole skill.
Step 2 — Break the shape into crochet-friendly forms
Almost every crocheted object decomposes into a small set of primitives: the flat circle, the tube, the sphere, the egg, the cone, and the flat panel. Design is choosing which primitives, at what size, joined how. A teddy bear is spheres and cylinders. A mushroom is a hemisphere on a tube. A pumpkin is a sphere with the ridges worked into the fabric. Once the shape is a list of primitives, the hard problem shrinks to sizing each one — and each primitive has a known stitch recipe you can reuse instead of rediscovering.

Designers of the math-first school can use exactly the same list in their own vocabulary — the output is named primitives with explicit per-round counts either way.
Step 3 — Turn the outline into stitch counts
This is the derivation step, and it is pure arithmetic: piece height ÷ row height = number of rows; widest width ÷ stitch width = maximum stitch count; the increases and decreases in between are what bend the outline. Kate McCully of Make Me Roar publishes the calculation in full: “The very first thing I do is draw the design at 1:1 scale… My row height is 4mm tall. 200 divided by 4 is 50. This means I will need 50 rounds in total.” Everything downstream depends on your own gauge, so measure it first — a gauge calculator turns a swatch into the stitch and row numbers this step needs, and for flat pieces the foundation chain page does the width-to-chains conversion.
The round rate law
A flat circle worked in the round from a 6-stitch magic ring grows by exactly 6 stitches per round — 6, 12, 18, 24, and so on — and every other shaped round is a variation on that rate. Increase at the flat rate and the fabric lies flat; increase slower and it curves into a bowl; hold the count constant and it rises as a straight tube; decrease and it closes. Those three behaviours — grow, hold, close — are the vocabulary the round schedules below are written in. Here are three of our published primitives with the counts our generator produces:

Read the three rows together and the rate law is visible: the flat circle never stops increasing, the cylinder stops at round 3 and holds, the sphere increases, holds, then mirrors its increases as decreases. Design a new shape and you are choosing where to switch between those three behaviours.
Why this step is the scarce one
The 2022 AmiGo research paper describes the state of practice bluntly: most designers “rely on trial and error methods which are tedious and time consuming.” The workflow itself is well taught — at least eight free step-by-step tutorials, four books, and several online courses cover it — but almost none of them show this arithmetic; the deepest treatments sit in paid long-form courses ranging from roughly $30 class fees to a $282 design course. It is not a secret — it is scattered and mostly monetized. Tooling exists at the edges: a 2012 browser tool, Crochet Lathe, turned a drawn profile curve into a written pattern for solids of revolution, and the research literature has generated patterns from 3D models. What no published tool does is take a character drawing and hand back its round schedule.

How to turn a drawing into an amigurumi pattern
For amigurumi specifically, the workflow is: decompose the character into spheres, eggs, cylinders and cones; size each part off the drawing; give each part its own round schedule; then write the assembly — which part sews to which, where, and in what order. Amigurumi is most often worked as a continuous single-crochet spiral (joined rounds are the other common construction, and a pattern should say which it uses). Worked that way, the SILHOUETTE of a part is carried by a column of numbers — the stitch count at the end of every round — which is what makes amigurumi a friendly place to start designing: get the column right and the outline follows. The counts are not the whole pattern, though. Stitch type, working into the back loop only, colour changes, surface detail and how the parts are joined all change the finished piece without changing a single number in that column, so they have to be written down separately.
Two practical rules save most of the trial and error. First, keep the stuffing in mind while you count: a sphere that increases too fast opens gaps that stuffing shows through, which is why amigurumi is worked on a hook one or two sizes smaller than the yarn band suggests. Second, write the assembly down while the pieces are still on your table — arm position and eye placement are the details a reader cannot re-derive from the counts, and the details you will not remember next week. Starting from a picture instead of a sketch
If your design already exists as an image — clip art, a silhouette, a photo, a scanned drawing — you can skip straight to counts: upload it and the generator converts it into a crochet pattern as a colour chart, or as a flat sew-on shape worked in single crochet rows. Step 4 — Write it down so someone else can work it
A publishable crochet pattern needs seven things: materials, gauge, finished measurements, the abbreviation list, the row or round instructions, a stitch count at the end of every row, and any special-stitch explanation. The stitch count is the part readers depend on most — it is how they catch a mistake at row 4 instead of at row 40. Two conventions cause most reader complaints. Declare your turning chain: in single crochet the ch 1 does not count as a stitch, in double crochet the ch 3 usually does, and a pattern that leaves this unsaid produces a reader whose edges drift. And declare your terminology — US and UK stitch names use the same words for different stitches. Step 5 — Test it before you publish
Work the pattern a second time from your own written words, not from memory, and change nothing while you do it. A decision you improvised at the hook the first time and never wrote down is invisible to you and fatal to your reader. Reworking from the text surfaces them, because your written instructions have to carry you rather than your recollection. Then check the arithmetic separately: every row's stitch count must equal what the row before it produced, with increases and decreases accounted for.
