Six-Leaf Flower

Granny SquaresIntermediate4mm hook2 rounds

A 6-petal flower whose petals are crocheted leaves — the spine-leaf flower's fuller sibling. Work a small joined centre, then a foundation-chain 'spine' out from every other stitch; slip-stitch back down each spine for the midrib, fan graded stitches (sc → hdc → dc → tr and back) off both sides, and finish each tip with a ch-3 picot so it pivots cleanly from one side of the leaf to the other. About 9-11 cm at DK gauge; a striking appliqué for bags, hats, and brooches

Step 1: Make the centre and 6 spines

Instructions

  1. 1Make the centre and 6 spines. Round 1: Make a magic ring, work 6 sc into it, and join with a sl st. Round 2: Work 2 sc in each st around (12 sc), join. Now add 6 spines, one on every other sc: *ch 9; sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch back to the base (8 sl sts) to form the spine; sl st in the next sc to walk to the next spine.* Repeat from * for all 6 spines.
  2. 2Work a leaf onto each spine. Dress each spine with a leaf blade. From the base, work one stitch into each chain up the first side — sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, sc — then work a ch-3 picot at the tip (ch 3, sl st in the first ch) to turn. Work the second side back down to the base with the mirror sequence — sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, sc. Sl st to the next spine and repeat. 6 petals in all.
